When it activates

Scribeable activates a calculator from the encounter. The Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED) can activate when the transcript or pasted chart context documents any of these:

  • Dry eye screening
  • Dry eye symptom assessment
  • Eye dryness evaluation
  • Contact lens intolerance workup
  • Dry eye treatment response

A coded diagnosis can also activate it. ICD-10 prefixes carried by the registry: H04.12.

Inputs the note needs

1 input. Each is resolved from the transcript, the pasted chart context and charted labs; at this calculator’s tier a missing input is never requested, and the code-scoring engine never inserts the score unprompted.

SPEED score (0-28) from frequency and severity of 4 symptomssymptom

Reference for licensed clinicians. Where the registry text carries dose thresholds or conversion factors, they are as published in the cited sources. This page is not a prescribing tool and not individualised medical advice; verify against a current drug reference and the current guideline before acting. Medical disclaimer.

Scoring

4 symptoms (dryness/grittiness/scratchiness, soreness/irritation, burning/watering, eye fatigue) each rated for frequency (0-3: never, sometimes, often, constant) and severity (0-4: no problems, tolerable, uncomfortable, bothersome, intolerable). Score = sum of frequency + severity scores. Range 0-28.

Interpretation

Score 0-4: Mild or no dry eye. Score 5-7: Moderate dry eye — consider treatment. Score >=8: Severe dry eye — treatment recommended. Quick and reproducible in clinical practice. Often used alongside OSDI for comprehensive assessment. Good correlation with clinical signs of dry eye disease.

How Scribeable handles it in the note

Scribeable can list the Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED) as available to the note when the clinician's specialty matches and the encounter activates it. Its highest activation tier is available: you are never asked for its inputs, and the code-scoring engine never inserts it into the draft unprompted.

The registry entry carries the inputs, scoring criteria and interpretation above so a score you state is documented against the same reference.

Classified as a questionnaire: a patient-reported or clinician-rated instrument, where a spare activation carries low harm.
