When it activates

Scribeable activates a calculator from the encounter. The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) can activate when the transcript or pasted chart context documents any of these:

  • Psychiatric symptom severity assessment
  • Inpatient psychiatric monitoring
  • Psychiatric medication response
  • Psychiatric emergency evaluation
  • Mental health treatment tracking

A coded diagnosis can also activate it. ICD-10 prefixes carried by the registry: F20, F30, F31, F32.

  • MDD F32.0
  • Bipolar Disorder F31.0
  • Schizophrenia F20.0

Note-type scope: it activates on notes whose subject resolves to psychiatry, emergency medicine. A note that resolves to another subject does not carry it even when the clinician's specialty matches; a note with no resolvable subject (a generic consultation) falls back to the specialty match.

Inputs the note needs

1 input. Each is resolved from the transcript, the pasted chart context and charted labs; at this calculator’s tier a missing input is never requested, and the code-scoring engine never inserts the score unprompted.

Scoring

18 items each rated 1 (not present) to 7 (extremely severe): somatic concern, anxiety, emotional withdrawal, conceptual disorganization, guilt feelings, tension, mannerisms/posturing, grandiosity, depressive mood, hostility, suspiciousness, hallucinatory behavior, motor retardation, uncooperativeness, unusual thought content, blunted affect, excitement, disorientation. Total 18-126.

Interpretation

Score <31: Not ill or very mildly ill. Score 31-40: Mildly ill. Score 41-52: Moderately ill. Score 53-65: Markedly ill. Score >65: Severely ill. Clinically significant change: >=20% reduction (response), >=40% reduction (good response). Quicker to administer than PANSS (10-15 min vs 30-40 min). Useful for cross-diagnostic severity tracking. Individual item scores >4 identify specific symptom targets for treatment. Inter-rater reliability improves with structured interview (SCI-BPRS).

How Scribeable handles it in the note

Scribeable can list the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) as available to the note when the clinician's specialty matches and the encounter activates it. Its highest activation tier is available: you are never asked for its inputs, and the code-scoring engine never inserts it into the draft unprompted.

The registry entry carries the inputs, scoring criteria and interpretation above so a score you state is documented against the same reference.

Classified as a questionnaire: a patient-reported or clinician-rated instrument, where a spare activation carries low harm.
