5 Practical Ways to Reduce Physician Burnout This Year

After interviewing dozens of physicians about burnout—from residents to attendings who considered leaving clinical practice—I've learned that fighting burnout isn't about grand gestures. It's about practical, daily changes that compound over time.
1. Eliminate After-Hours Documentation
"Pajama time"—the hours spent charting at home after the kids are in bed—is one of the most insidious contributors to burnout. It blurs the line between work and personal life, creating the sense that you're never truly off.
- Use AI documentation tools to complete notes during the clinic day
- Set a hard stop time—when you leave, you're done
- Build 5 minutes of documentation time into each appointment slot
- If notes pile up, address the root cause rather than just working longer
2. Protect Your Lunch Break
It sounds simple, but how many of us actually take a lunch break? Eating while charting or seeing patients through lunch isn't sustainable.
- Block lunch on your schedule as an appointment with yourself
- Leave the clinic space—even 15 minutes in a different environment helps
- Use this time to reset, not to "catch up"
- If your schedule doesn't allow breaks, that's a systemic issue to address
3. Reduce Inbox Burden
The inbox—patient messages, refill requests, lab results—has become a second job. Some studies show physicians spend 90+ minutes daily on inbox tasks.
- Batch inbox work to 2-3 specific times per day
- Train staff to handle what they can (refills, scheduling, routine questions)
- Use templated responses for common scenarios
- Set patient expectations about response times in your practice
4. Reclaim the Patient Relationship
Most of us went into medicine for the patient connection. When that disappears behind a screen, burnout follows.
- Use ambient recording so you can make eye contact, not type
- Start visits by sitting down and asking an open-ended question
- Celebrate small wins with patients—their successes are yours too
- Remember one personal detail about each patient (pets, hobbies, family)
5. Build Community with Colleagues
Isolation amplifies burnout. Connection with colleagues who understand what you're going through is protective.
- Join or start a peer support group at your institution
- Debrief difficult cases with trusted colleagues
- Attend specialty society meetings for perspective outside your daily grind
- Mentor a trainee—teaching can reconnect you with your purpose
